It seems like you can not turn on the TV or pick up a magazine
without seeing a tantalizing pitch for a product that promises
to rev up your metabolism( the rate at which your body burns calories) so that you lose the weight the quick and easy way. Turn off your TV and put down the magazine because the truth is the so called miracle cures offered in some health food stores and on television are either dangerous or ineffective.
However, on the upside researchers say that there is an extremely effective way to ramp up your metabolism. It is not found in a bottle, it is done by packing on more muscle. The link has to do with the way your body processes food.
From the moment you eat your body begins the complicated task of
converting the food into fuel or calories. If the calories are
not burned for energy, the body stores them as fat. Your age, the amount of exercise you get and your basal metabolic rate (BMR), which is the rate at which your body burns calories while at rest, all factor into how many calories your burn each day.
You can only blame your parents or ailments a little for
a slothful BMR. The chief reason for a slow metabolism is
the couch. If you do not move, you will not raise your rate.
Experts say that the key to boosting your metabolism is
muscle mass. Muscle is more “metabolically active” then fat.
If a muscular person and a flabby person are lounging around,
the muscular person burns more fat. If you build your body mass
your burn calories even when your doing nothing.
In order to build muscle you should start lifting weights, doing
resistance training with tools like a band or participating in
core strengthening workouts like pilates.
